3 Days in Cologne
Three days are enough not just to tick Cologne off, but to really feel it. We combine the iconic sights with brewhouse tradition, the modern architecture of the Rheinauhafen and the creative pulse of the Belgian Quarter. Day 1
Classic Cologne around the cathedral
The first day belongs to the landmark. We approach the cathedral slowly, see it from the inside, climb the south tower and end the classic way in a brewhouse.

Visit Cologne Cathedral
See the interior before the first wave of tourists, then climb the south tower (533 steps, 330 feet up). The reward: a 360-degree panorama over Cologne and the surrounding area.
Tip: Start before 10:30, while the tower climb is still empty. Wear sturdy shoes and travel light (large bags stay below).

Museum Ludwig or the Roman-Germanic Museum
Right next to the cathedral sit two of Germany's most important museums. Museum Ludwig holds the largest Picasso collection in Europe. If you're short on time, at least catch the foyer with the Dionysus Mosaic at the Roman-Germanic Museum.
Tip: The Roman-Germanic Museum is under renovation until 2030 - its highlights are currently shown at the Belgisches Haus on Neumarkt.

Lunch at the Früh am Dom brewhouse
A classic brewhouse start: Halve Hahn (a rye roll with cheese), Himmel un Ääd (mashed potato with applesauce and black pudding) and a Früh Kölsch on tap. The Köbes waiters are famously quick-witted.
Tip: In summer, reserve inside - the beer garden is huge but loud.

Old Town stroll & the Hohenzollern Bridge
Wander through the Old Town lanes toward the Rhine via Heumarkt and Alter Markt. See the 500,000 love locks on the Hohenzollern Bridge, then cross to Deutz for the best cathedral photo of the trip.

The Romanesque basilica of Groß St. Martin on the Alter Markt is one of Cologne's twelve great Romanesque churches. Quiet inside, and a signature landmark of the Old Town outside.

The three Crane Houses are Cologne's modern emblem. Walk along the riverbank from the Chocolate Museum to the Bayenturm. The best photos are from the opposite bank (Poller Wiesen).

Cross to Deutz and up to the 330-foot deck of the KölnTriangle. Nowhere else does Cologne lie before you like this - the cathedral, the Old Town, the Hohenzollern Bridge and the Rhine in a half circle.

Take the tram back to the Old Town. The Gothic city hall (Germany's oldest) is worth a quick look: a Renaissance loggia and a carillon that plays Stockhausen compositions on the hour.
