Advent in Cologne
Cologne Christmas Markets
Seven Christmas markets run in Cologne during Advent, several of them within a fifteen-minute walk of one another. In 2026 the season runs from November 23 through December 23. If you have never been to a German Weihnachtsmarkt, this is the city to start with: the biggest one sits directly beneath a Gothic cathedral, and you can walk between four or five of them in a single evening.
What a German Christmas market actually is
A Weihnachtsmarkt is not a shopping mall event. It is a temporary village of wooden huts built on a public square, open daily for about a month, and the point of it is standing outside in the cold with a hot drink in your hand. There is no ticket and no gate. You walk in off the street, buy something warm, and wander.
Three things you will want to try, and what they are:
- Glühwein (mulled wine): red wine heated with cinnamon, cloves and citrus. It is served in a real ceramic mug, not a paper cup. You pay a deposit, called Pfand, on top of the price of the drink. Bring the mug back to any hut of that market and you get the deposit returned, or keep the mug as a souvenir and simply forgo it. Many people do. Order it mit Schuss and you get a shot of rum or amaretto in it.
- Gebrannte Mandeln (candied roasted almonds): almonds tumbled in a copper drum with caramelizing sugar. You smell them from three huts away. Sold by weight in a paper cone.
- Reibekuchen (potato pancakes): grated potato fried crisp and served, confusingly to most Americans, with applesauce. This is a Rhineland specialty and Cologne takes it seriously. Order three, share them, eat them standing up.
Payment: many huts are cash-only, so bring euros in small bills. Dress warmer than you think you need to. You will be outdoors and largely stationary for several hours.
The markets worth planning around
Weihnachtsmarkt am Dom (Cathedral Christmas Market)
The one on every postcard. It fills the square at the foot of Cologne Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site whose towers rise 515 feet above the huts. The visual is hard to overstate: a lit Christmas tree, rows of wooden stalls, and a cathedral begun in 1248 going straight up behind them. It is also the busiest of the Cologne markets, so weekday afternoons are far more pleasant than a Saturday night. The market is a two-minute walk from the main train station, which means you can be off a train and holding a Glühwein faster than in almost any other German city.
Heinzels Wintermärchen on the Heumarkt
Heumarkt is Cologne's second-largest square and has been a marketplace since the Middle Ages, with the equestrian statue of the Prussian king Friedrich Wilhelm III at its center. In winter it hosts Heinzels Wintermärchen, named after the Heinzelmännchen, the house gnomes of Cologne folklore who, in the legend, did all the city's work overnight until a tailor's wife spied on them. The staging leans storybook, and the square sits in the Old Town, so the brewhouses are a few steps away when you want to be indoors with a Kölsch, the local beer served in narrow 0.2-liter glasses.
The Engelchen market on Neumarkt
Cologne's angel market, on Neumarkt, roughly a ten-minute walk southwest of the cathedral. The name is the whole theme: angels, and a canopy of lights strung above the aisles between the huts. It photographs best after dark, so save it for the end of the evening.
And the rest
Beyond those three, smaller markets rotate through the city each Advent, including one at the Stadtgarten, Cologne's first modern park. Cologne's markets are close enough together that a single walking loop, cathedral to Heumarkt to Neumarkt, covers the essentials in an evening.
Planning your visit
The Advent season in 2026 runs from November 23 to December 23. Weekends are significantly more crowded than weekdays, and the first weekend of Advent and the last weekend before Christmas are the two peaks. If you have a choice, come midweek in early December.
Everything described here is walkable. Cologne's Old Town is compact, the markets are clustered in and around it, and the cathedral is visible from most of it, which makes getting lost difficult. Comfortable waterproof shoes matter more than anything else you pack.
Where to stay
Hotels in the Old Town and around the cathedral book out early for Advent weekends, and prices climb accordingly. We keep a live price and availability list for the Christmas market weekend on our Christmas market hotel page, and a full hotel index for Cologne covering every neighborhood from the Old Town to the Rheinauhafen.
