St. Maria im Kapitol is the largest of Cologne's twelve Romanesque churches. Built on the site of a Roman capitol and consecrated in 1065 in the presence of Emperor Henry IV, its carved 11th-century door panels show 26 scenes from the life of Jesus and rank among the most important Romanesque craftsmanship.
